Hahndorf South Australia

During our recent stay at Glenelg, we took another day trip to explore Hahndorf, which is only twenty-seven kilometres from Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills. While on our way to Hahndorf, we took time to stop at the highest peak in the Adelaide Hills, Mount Lofty Lookout. The panoramic view from the lookout over Adelaide and on to the ocean was amazing.

Then, we were off to Nepethene Wines where we enjoyed wine tasting and local art. The views over the winery were simply breathtaking to say the least.

Hahndorf South Australia

Next, we took a step back in time to the oldest surviving German settlement. Hahndorf in South Australia was built in 1839; however, it features all the mod cons. A major part of this place’s charm is the quaint German cottages, some of which have been maintained beautifully while others have been restored to their original conditions.

Hahndorf is known for its local gourmet produce. In addition, there are a number of top quality restaurants, cafes, boutique shops and historic pubs. We stopped at the Beerenberg Farm shop, where we bought some yummy home-style jams, pickles and mustard. There was such a huge variety of tasty goodies from which to choose. You can even pick your own strawberries if you visit between October and May.

The German cuisine we had for lunch at the Hahndorf Inn was utterly delicious. I had a scrumptious meal that was perfect for a cold day. Just as you would expect, German beer is also available at the pub, including Hofbrau Bier, which is imported from Munich.

Not quite ready to call it a day, we stopped by the Hahndorf Hill Winery just outside of Hahndorf Village on our way home. We had a wonderful time tasting the fine boutique wines as we took in the amazing view over the winery. Hahndorf is most definitely a place that I would love to come back to when we have more time to spend looking around, taking in the wineries and discovering all that the Adelaide Hills has to offer.
